As you prepare for the summer months, there may be times when you’ll need to take a break from your sport of choice. Taking time away from tennis or pickleball doesn’t mean your fitness or skills have to slide. Whether it’s due to weather, travel, or injury, there are strategic ways to stay conditioned and return to the court ready to play your best.

1. Maintain Your Cardiovascular Fitness

Activities, like cycling, swimming, or walking, keep your heart and lungs strong without the repetitive impact of court play.

2. Focus on Strength and Stability

Balance exercises, like single-leg stands or using a stability ball, can mimic the dynamic movements on the court.

3. Prioritize Flexibility and Mobility

Daily stretching and mobility drills ensure your body stays nimble. Focus on shoulders, hips, and hamstrings to replicate the range of motion needed for groundstrokes, volleys, and serves.

4. Keep Your Reflexes Sharp

Quick reactions are essential for both sports. Simple drills like tossing and catching a ball against a wall, agility ladder exercises, or shadow swings in your living room keep your neuromuscular coordination fresh.

When your break ends, start with shorter sessions, moderate intensity, and plenty of warm-ups. Your conditioning work will pay off, minimizing the risk of injury and helping you regain timing faster.
