Beat the Heat: Staying Safe While Playing Tennis and Pickleball This Summer
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor tennis and pickleball, but rising temperatures can pose real heat-related risks. Here are some essential tips to keep you safe and energized on the court during the hottest months:
- Hydrate Early and Often Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your game. Incorporate natural electrolyte-rich mineral and spring water or electrolyte drinks for longer sessions to replenish lost minerals. Avoid caffeine or sugary sodas, which can speed up dehydration.
- Dress for the Heat Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics in light colors help keep your core temperature down. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sweatbands can provide extra protection from intense sun.
- Time Your Play Strategically Try to schedule your games during the cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening. Midday sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. is the most intense and can increase the risk of heat exhaustion.
- Take Breaks and Seek Shade Rest in shaded areas or use a sun umbrella during changeovers. Listen to your body—take breaks before you feel drained.
- Know the Warning Signs of Heat Illness Watch for dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, or confusion. If you begin to feel these symptoms, stop playing immediately, hydrate, and move to a cool area.
- Protect Your Skin Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before playing, and reapply every two hours or after heavy sweating.
With proper preparation and awareness, you can enjoy tennis and pickleball all summer long while keeping safe in the heat. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and make this summer season your best on the court!
