“The Secret Life of Sunflowers” by Marta Molnar is a historical fiction novel that uses a dual-timeline structure to tell the story of Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law, and a modern-day woman, Emsley Wilson, who discovers Johanna’s diary. The book follows Johanna’s efforts to promote Vincent’s art after his and her husband Theo’s deaths, while Emsley navigates her own challenges, finding inspiration in Johanna’s resilience as she deals with her own failing business and personal life. The novel explores themes of female empowerment, legacy, and overcoming adversity in different eras.
Book Club questions or concerns can be directed to Barb Hanlin or Laurel Borgia. Their information is in the directory.
