As the summer temperatures rise, staying cool while enjoying your favorite racquet sports is essential for both performance and safety. Whether you’re playing tennis or pickleball, here are some strategies to beat the heat:

1. Hydrate Early and Often
Begin hydrating before you even step onto the court. Drink water or sports drinks consistently throughout your match to replace fluids lost through sweat.

2. Choose Breathable Clothing
Opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking apparel in light colors. Fabrics like polyester blends or mesh panels can help with airflow and sweat evaporation.

3. Use Cooling Accessories
Cooling towels, wristbands, and caps can make a big difference. Wet a cooling towel and place it around your neck during breaks to quickly lower your body temperature.

4. Play During Cooler Hours
Schedule your games in the morning or late evening when the sun is less intense. If daytime play is unavoidable, seek shaded courts or indoor facilities.

5. Take Frequent Breaks
Listen to your body and rest between games or sets. Step into shaded areas and allow your heart rate and temperature to come down.

6. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours. Sunglasses and visors can also help protect your eyes and face from harsh rays.

7. Know the Signs of Heat Stress
Fatigue, dizziness, or muscle cramps can be early symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Stop playing immediately and cool down if you experience any warning signs.

By following these tips, you can stay safe, comfortable, and focused on your game, no matter how hot it gets outside.

The main thing is to stay hydrated and remember to take it easy when it is so hot outside! Pro stay cool and please check the Gateway calendar soon for all the fun Fall Pickleball and Tennis events,

See you at the courts!
