SPEAKER MELISSA SOMMERS

The creation of the Cancer Support Community was inspired by the legacy of Gilda Radner. Melissa Sommers, LCSW, OSW-C, an experienced medical oncology social worker, explained the Cancer Support Community is a unique not-for-profit program, dedicated to addressing the emotional and social aspects of cancer care for everyone, including patients, caregivers, family and survivors.

The Cancer Support Community offers a dedicated space designed to be a destination for healing and connection. The Community’s mission statement reads, “Lee Health Cancer Institute and Cancer Support Community uplifts and strengthens people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities and breaking down barriers to care.” CSC welcomes new members and encourages anyone affected including patients, caregivers, family members and survivors to join. Support groups and programs are offered free. Here, it is believed that community is stronger than Cancer. CSC’s vision states: “Everyone impacted by cancer receives the support they want and need throughout their experience.” CSC offers support groups and programs at no cost to participants. Some of the programs offered include:

SUPPORT through weekly groups led by professionals offering guidance, comfort and connection.

EDUCATION taught by experts in a wide range of cancer-related topics to help you stay informed and empowered.

HEALTHY LIVING is explored through nutrition, movement, expressive arts, and mind-body practices, like yoga, to support overall well-being.

SOCIAL CONNECTION where participants enjoy club and activities for all ages that bring joy and build community

RESOURCES & REFERRALS offer access to library and referral services to help participants navigate every step of their journey.

Licensed professionals apply multidisciplinary approaches to ensure participants receive high-quality, specialized care to help navigate every stage of the cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship and grief. This space provides a comprehensive support system, fostering connection, strength, and healing.

Cancer Support Community opened in August 2025 and now has 180 members, 7 volunteers and a small dedicated staff. Educational classes and support groups are led by Cancer Institute professionals. CSC is located on the 4th floor of the Lee Health Regional Cancer Center, 8931 Colonial Cancer Drive 33905. 239/343-9500.
